I haven’t disappeared again

Posted by jackie blue on November 14th, 2006

I’m just lost in miles and miles of mohair ruffles. People who know me have probably heard me swear many times I will never knit with mohair again (especially dental floss weight mohair) but damn, Elfin needs her ruffles. And many ruffles she has.

I’m also still working on the first Rhinebeck Socks that Rock sock. I vowed to keep going till the yarn was gone, and it will be nearly, if not, knee height very soon. Of course there’s Sock #2 to worry about then. And it’s really only my travel project and I don’t commute to work every day, so it’s slow going.

Tonight I’ll finish seaming Elfin and then it’s just Ruffles Away. Meanwhile, I’m itching to start one new thing, so will it be something with the brown alpaca I bought at Rhinebeck 2 years ago or will it be the Greenwood Hill merino I bought this year? It’s a really hard call…

Beware picking up old projects

Posted by jackie blue on November 6th, 2006

Especially old projects in which you’ve used a different yarn at a different gauge than the pattern, and have rewritten the pattern instructions leaving only chicken scratches with your modifications. Remember Elfin? I thought it would be really nice to finish this soon before starting anything new, since I only had one sleeve and then some seaming and ruffling left to go. So I spent a good part of the weekend, starting with knitting with a friend on Thurs. night, working on said sleeve.

Last night I compared sleeves and the new one was way short. But, I read the modifications, and counting all my decreases and increases carefully, how could this be? Wait, it feels kinda tight. Oops, guess I used needles at least 2 sizes smaller than I should have. Oh well. Rip rip. I’m now knitting the sleeve back up again. Lesson learned, TAKE NOTES. Or don’t wait a year to finish a sweater.

I’m not even done with that first sock yet. I thought it might be a good idea to knit up till the yarn was gone. So now I’m looking at knee socks, and I have a ways to go on the first one. I fear second socks syndrome if I don’t end this one soon.

Finished Starsky

Posted by jackie blue on November 3rd, 2006

Finally, a photo. Starsky was finished last weekend but it got too warm to wear it, and even at a brisk 39 degrees this morning – wearing just a cashmere turtleneck and Starsky, I was broiling. This is a WARM sweater.

Pattern: Starsky from Knitty
Modification: Added cables to plain stockinette sleeves
Yarn: Peruvian Highland Chunky from Elann

And just for the hell of it, a picture of Kennedy making himself quite at home.

After 25 of various car ownership and 16 years with my current car, I am carless. My mother just called, she just sold it. It sat on her lot for ages, unused except for the occasional dinner out near her place in the summers, and months would go by without it being driven. I don’t need a car in Manhattan. I rarely leave town to a place I’d need to drive. The car had lost most of it’s shine due to sitting in sea/salt air, and the paint job was atrocious, so I was embarrassed to even be seen in it. It leaked from damage from a long ago hurricane. The interior was drying up. But yet, she just called to tell me this and I burst into tears.

Bye car. I will really miss you.

Worst thing is, she sold it to someone who works in her building. It will remain in our parking spot till he fixes it up, and I will probably see it again when it is lovely and new looking. And it won’t be mine. Sniff.

*disclaimer – the photo above is the same model/color of my car, but not my actual car. Can you believe I don’t even have a photo to remember it by? sniff.

Starsky is done but due to warmth and laziness, didn’t take any photos yet.
